New scientific methods offer new insights in the past. Promising opportunities for archaeology and historiography are confronted with the challenges of interdisciplinary cooperation between the sciences and the humanities. This volume presents contributions by European researchers, arranged in four sections: fundamental questions of archaeology and biosciences, migrations, transformations, and social structures.

Empirical studies on discourse analysis include Brooks' analysis of how the UK press portrays obesity, Coats generating ASR transcripts to look at dialect data from YouTube, and Gonzalez-Cruz's pragmatic considerations of Anglicisms entering Canarian-Spanish digital headlines. Aperias of European integration: between humanitarian universalism and sovereignism is the result of a study and research process that involved researchers from the University of Évora and the Centro de Investigação em Ciência Política (CICP) in Portugal and scholars from the DSU of Federico II in Naples and other prestigious Italian universities. The book, divided into three sections, deals with the conflict between universalism - understood as a philosophical principle of the Western cultural tradition and as a juridical-political principle at the basis of the integration process - and the principle of sovereignty, which instead tends to preserve the political autonomy of states in the process of integration. Contributions by: Peluso, Morfino, Cacciatore, Giannini, Rocha Chuna, Boemio, Basso, Amendola, Arienzo, Tinè, Höbel Donato, D'Acunto.

This discourse-analytical study of the research into race relations carried out in Great Britain from 1950 to 1980 links perspectives from intellectual history and action theory. It shows that race relations research was a scholarly reaction to migration and the race riots, and that there was an interrelationship between scholarly discourse and social change, which had an enormous influence on political thought in Great Britain.

The contributions shed light on doubt in medieval culture and literature in an interdisciplinary way. They focus on processes of reflection that, in the face of dissent and aporia, can lead to compromise – as a cultural technique, an ethical norm of action, a literary strategy of argument. The aim is to grasp the epoch-specificity of pre-modern compromise in religious, aesthetic, political and legal-historical discourses.
