©Electre 2016

Essays by Prem Krishnamurthy, Jan De Vylder and Tom Van Imschoot. Photo-Essay by Michiel De Cleene. With new work by Karel Martens, Tauba Auerbach, Experimental Jetset, Ben Thorp Brown, Braulio Amado, David Horvitz, Max Pinckers, Daniel Eatock, Nina Canell, Fiona Banner, Dexter Sinister, Sanam Khatibi, Filip Dujardin and many many others. 019 is an artist collective running an exhibition, performance and work space in a former welding factory in Ghent. 019 was never going to remain the only place we worked in. From the start, it's been a laboratory that swings us into unknown directions, constantly sharpening our sense of improvisation and reinvention on the spot. For three years, from 2013 onwards, we made that old welding factory at Dok Noord in Ghent the focal point of our activities. People even started to identify the entirety of our collective, Smoke & Dust, with what was basically only the name of its nineteenth project. We became 019. The whole project turned us upside down. But in doing so, we became aware as well. We understood that the act of occupying and taking possession of the site was not the goal of our work at all. From the inside out, starting with a wooden construction in its interior and up to the billboard at an outside wall and a series of flagpoles on the roof, we gradually developed the place into an assembly of undergrounds for public and artistic encounter, an emerging space for collaboration that was grounded on the premise that all media at our disposal were common grounds to be rediscovered. That's when the work began. In continuation of S&D#025/ APE#047: 'So Many Dark Gifts' (ISBN 9789490800291) and S&D#024/APE#069: Sabotage And Complicity (ISBN 9789490800499).

She is known for her life-size sculptures of human figures in public space, which are to be found from Brussels to Connecticut. Hanneke Beaumont says she imagines the homo universalis, who she aims to portray in all its vulnerability. For 35 years, she has been a key part of the international art scene with works in the collections of, among others, the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, the Baker Museum in Florida and the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Michigan. The latter two also organised a highly-successful solo exposition of her work.

Together with Posture Editions, Koba De Meutter (b. 1992) creates 'So That Afternoon We Both Made an Empty Circle', a book with visual work that is the result of two recent artist's residences in Mexico. De Meutter combines sculpturally adaptable modules (consisting of metal rods and 'holders') with found material in deliberate actions or chance events, often in public spaces. In the book, photographs of her interventions in Mexico City are combined with a series of drawings she made during her second residence in art centre Casa Wabi. The drawings feature imaginary characters from her memories of her stay in Mexico City - yet they are no less realistic or near.

Civil society around the world is increasingly dealing with global questions, whereby it also begins to assume transnational forms of organisation. The arts, with their ability to project alternative realities and communicate ideas, can play a key role in addressing public and political problems. In looking at different platforms, activist groups, and new forms of citizens' initiatives, this book asks how cultural and art initiatives can both question and strengthen the civil domain. Social scientists, cultural theorists, activists, and artists explore how arts and culture can offer various strategies and forms of organisation for a locally rooted society in a globally connected context.

The exhibition Urban Matters is a new chapter of Adrien Tirtiaux’s research into the public realm, which is also one of artconnexion’s main interests. A series of massive sculptures demonstrates his method of working with the urban fabric, as do his three interventions in situ. The specific features of « 9 rue du cirque » and the immediate surroundings are taken as various opportunities of diversion, intrusion and interfe- rence. Adrien Tirtiaux plays with the delimitations of the exhibition space, disturbing the usual functions of the building and blurring the borders between the inside and the outside. Finally the whole building is used as material, treated as matter and revealed to be both porous and opaque, implying a conception of the city as a malleable space.

In Aporie is the first monograph on Kwade covering a wide range of her intriguing works. Being ‘In Aporie’ is to be in a state where an insoluble theoretical problem allows for the paradoxical knowledge of one’s own ignorance. From early on in her career, Kwade was never afraid to ponder complicated scientific and mathematical questions in her objects, sculptures, and installations, such as probability calculation, astronomical wormholes, the endless universe, and parallel realities. And these complex ideas and theories continue to fuel her artistic practice and drive. Besides many images of her work, the monograph features articles by Danish experts on her work.
