Many designers use folding techniques in their work to make three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional sheets of fabric, cardboard, plastic, metal, and many other materials. This unique book explains the key techniques of folding, such as pleated surfaces, curved folding and crumpling. An elegant, practical handbook, it covers over 70 techniques explained by clear step-by-step drawings, crease-pattern drawings, and specially commissioned photography.

Unlike other packaging titles, which simply provide templates to copy, this book enables designers of all packaging types to create 3-D packaging forms that are specific to their needs rather than based on an existing design. It teaches a simple ‘net’ construction system – a one-piece 2-D configuration of card seen when a 3-D package is opened out and flattened – which enables the designer to create a huge number of very strong 3-D packaging forms that are both practical and imaginative. Each chapter concludes with photographs and net drawings of 6–10 creative examples of packaging designs made using the principles outlined in the preceding chapter. Structural Packaging gives the reader an understanding of the underlying principles of packaging construction and the technical knowledge and confidence to develop a greater number of their own unusual and innovative designs than any comparable book.

Sofia Vyzoviti explores the issue of paper folding as a spatial, structural and organizational diagram. In a foremost visual way the volume shows many folding techniques and folding algorithms which can be used in the design process.

Soft Shells is a follow-up title to Sophia Vyzoviti’s bestselling books, Folding Architecture and Supersurfaces. Where Folding Architecture explored folding as a design method in architecture, and Supersurfaces showed experiments in a fusion design field between product design, fashion and architecture, the new Soft Shells investigates textile as a retro-novel architectural device which is porous and deployable. The book is lavishly illustrated with form experiments and has three essays that provide the reader with a state-of-the-art context for the architectural discourse on formgenerative surface.

The Belgian designer Charles Kaisin is particularly known for his K-Bench, an extendable bench for which he was awarded the Most Innovative Object prize at the Montreal Design Fair. As the young prodigy of Belgian design, he has been commissioned by several well-known brands because of his creativity in the domains of leather-working, accessory and furniture design. His work is particularly imbued with the concepts of 'extension' and 'recycling', like his Hairy Chair and Newspaper Extendable Bench, but he also ventures into other domains. He designed a lecture theatre for Grand Hornu Images, stackable seating/stowing elements for Vange, porcelain for Royal Boch and even chocolate delicacies for Pierre Marcolini Chocolatier.
