While the literature on second language acquisition and use is overwhelmingly rich with respect to initial and intermediate stages of development, present knowledge of levels of ultimate attainment that are equal or close to that if native speakers has so far not been presented in a coherent manner. This is what the present volume aims to achieve. In addition to chapters that summarize what is currently known about the grammatical, lexical, and discourse features that continue to exhibit instability at the most advanced levels of second language development, the volume presents overviews of the incipient research on two unique learner populations, polyglots and employees in international call centres. Polyglots, defined as language users who are proficient in six or more second languages, may be considered second language learners par excellence. Call centre employees in economically less developed parts of the world are intriguing in how they cope with the high language proficiency requirements of their job. In conclusion, this book is relevant for all readers - both professionals and students - interested in the development of second language theory. For language teachers, the book provides insights that are profitable in classrooms for advanced learners.

The Coverage and Analysis Group at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requested from The Technology Assessment Program (TAP) at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) a horizon scan to summarize the available scientific evidence on the quality of laboratory-developed ("home brew" or "in-house") molecular tests, which are currently not actively regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CMS has concerns about the quality of laboratory-developed tests and the validation currently being performed on these tests. AHRQ assigned this report to the following Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC): ECRI EPC (Contract Number: 290 2007 10063 I). To help CMS to address its concerns, this horizon scan is intended to: 1. identify types of laboratory-developed molecular tests (LDMTs) currently available for conditions relevant to the Medicare over-65-year-old population; 2. identify the methodologies and the processes that have been developed for the assessment of analytical and clinical performance of molecular tests; 3. summarize the role of Federal agencies in regulating LDMTs; and 4. identify the quality standards that have been developed for molecular tests by regulatory bodies, the industry, and the medical community.

Dans quelle mesure notre langue maternelle conditionne-elle notre pratique d’une langue étrangère ? Quelles sont les marques observables que cette langue maternelle laisse dans notre discours dans une autre langue et de quoi dépendent-elles? Ces questions servent de point de départ du présent travail qui, au moyen d'une enquête sociolinguistique menée auprès de locuteurs hispanophones et francophones, tente d’y apporter des réponses. Dans quelle mesure l’aisance communicationnelle dans une langue étrangère, le contexte de la pratique ou encore le discours métalinguistique déterminent-ils le degré d’influence de la langue maternelle ? Le pari de ce travail est d’accorder une place à la composante sociale dans la problématique de l’influence linguistique, ainsi que de proposer une nouvelle analyse à la lumière des informations contextuelles de la production linguistique en langue étrangère.
