Het boek geeft een elementaire behandeling van de meeste bewerkingsprocessen en de daarmee samenhangende productietechnische aspecten. Daarmee wordt een overzicht geboden van het gehele voortbrengingsproces en de belangrijkste aspecten van de technische bedrijfsvoering in een industriële omgeving. Tot de doelgroep behoren studenten werktuigbouwkunde, vliegtuigbouwkunde, industrieel ontwerpen, technische bedrijfskunde en verwante studierichtingen in het wetenschappelijk en hoger beroepsonderwijs. Voor studenten werktuigbouw vormt het boek een eerste kennismaking met het vakgebied, maar voor bijvoorbeeld ontwerpers en bedrifjskundigen, die hun vak niet kunnen uitoefenen zonder inzicht in de huidige bewerkings- en productieprocessen, zal de diepgang in het algemeen voldoende zijn.
