Abstract

Plato's contribution to narratology has traditionally been traced in his tripartite categorisation of narrative modes we read of in the Republic. Although other aspects of storytelling are also addressed throughout the Platonic oeuvre, such passages are treated as instantaneous flares of metanarrative speculation on Plato's part and do not seem to contribute to the reconstruction of his 'theory of narrative'. Vasileios Liotsakis challenges this view and argues that the Statesman, the Timaeus/Critias and the Laws reveal that Plato had consolidated in his mind and compositionally put into effect one systematic mode in which to express his thoughts on narratives. In these dialogues Liotsakis recognizes the birth of a proto-narratology which differs in many respects from what we today expect from a narratological handbook, but still demonstrates two key-features of narratology: (a) a conscious focus on certain aspects of narrativity which are vastly discussed by narratologists and pertain to the structuring and reception of narratives; and (b) a schematised mode of interaction between metanarrative reflections and textual bodies which serve as the paradigms through which to explore the interpretive potential of these reflections.

Abstract

How can we develop a cultural theory starting with the basic insight that human beings are "storytelling animals"? Within literary studies, narratology is a highly developed field. However, literary historians have not paid much attention to the large and small stories abounding in everyday discourse, guiding all kinds of social activity, and providing common ground for whole societies-but also fueling controversies and hostilities. Moreover, "narrative" is not only a scholarly category but has come into use in many fields of social activity as a tool for cultural self-fashioning. This book is based on the assumption that to a large extent, social dynamics is modeled in an aesthetic manner via narratives. It explores the narrative organization of cultural spaces and time-frames, the mythological shaping of communities and adversaries, and the co-production of narratives and institutions aimed at stabilizing social life. In this framework, the epistemological problem looms large of how an instrument as unreliable as narrative can participate in the creation of a social consensus regarding truth. This problem endows the general topics explored in this book with a particularly contemporary dimension.

Abstract

Koron’s monograph explores a vast field of theory – occassionally called post-classical narratology – from the historical-developmental and the systematic or theoretical-methodological perspectives. The first part of the book treats the theoretical preliminaries, basic concepts, terminological questions, delimitations of the research subject, and the definitions of narrative. The second part outlines the history of narrative theories, divided into several phases, and the formation of its concepts. The third part discusses Slovenian contributions to the field and compares them to the international state of research. The fourth part examines the applicability of contemporary narratological approaches to concrete texts. It treats the concept of omniscient narration, aspects of narratology of drama and the phenomenon of narrativity in the plays of Dušan Jovanović (1939–), the development of gendered narratology, the introduction of narratological concepts in autobiographies and concludes the discussion with entering the interdisciplinary field of historiographical narratology. Drugi del sledi zgodovini teorij pripovedi in oblikovanju njenega pojmovnega instrumentarija skozi več razvojnih faz. Tretji del pregleda slovenske dosežke in jih primerja z razvojem mednarodnih raziskav. Četrti del pa preverja aplikabilnost sodobnih pripovednoteoretskih teženj ob konkretnem gradivu. Obravnava koncept vsevednega pripovedovanja, vidike naratologije drame in pojav pripovednosti v dramatiki Dušana Jovanovića, razvoj naratologije družbenih spolov, vpeljavo pripovednoteoretskih kategorij v raziskovanje avtobiografij in zaokroži razpravljanje z vstopom na interdisciplinarno področje t. i. historiografske naratologije.
