Geographic Information Systems for Intermodal Transportation: Methods, Models, Applications examines the basic concepts and applications of Geographic Information Systems for Transportation. The book discusses the unique characteristics of each transportation mode-- highway, railway, waterway and airway-as well as the combined intermodal transportation network. The book shows how GIS generates vehicle routes and shorted paths, develops transportation demand models, analyzes spatial data, and how three-dimensional modelling is applied to the intermodal transportation. Includes real-world case studies from diverse situations Provides step-by-steps insights using data to deliver effective outputs for all stakeholders Presents models and practices for using GIS techniques to solve intermodal transportation problems Includes learnings tools such as chapter objectives, discussion questions and a glossary.

"This expanded and revised fifth edition provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. It provides an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation and focuses on how the mobility of passengers and freight is linked with geography. This volume is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interested in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering. A companion web site, which contains photographs, maps, figures and PowerPoint presentations, can be found here: https://transportgeography.org/"--

Transport accessibility to jobs, education, supply, and public services, which are usually most concentrated in large regional centers, has an impact on lower economic costs (savings in time and energy consumption), greater social justice (better and more equal access to jobs and education), and lower pressures on the environment (reduction of harmful emissions and noise, and increased road safety). Transport accessibility as a spatial component affects the widest range of development opportunities in an area, and it should therefore represent a significant component of regional and spatial planning. This book presents the main features of transport accessibility to regional centers as the central pillars of regional and spatial structure in Slovenia. Attention is focused on addressing the situation in accessibility planning itself, followed by modeling geographic reality using spatial analyses in a geographic information system. Emphasis is placed on the state of spatial equilibrium of regional centers. This study also examines the spatial differences in their accessibility, the main reasons for these differences, and the correspondence between regional borders in various regionalization proposals for Slovenia and their centers’ borders of accessibility.

The main goal of the entire project was so to investigate problems of daily commuting of workers, pupils and students, especially from the modal split point of view. The project is structured in two parts. The first part of the book is an extensive analysis of modal split by different relations (routes) and groups of commuters (pupils, secondary school pupils, students and workers). We tried to establish the areas in Slovenia where the usage of public transport is the weakest and to provide credible causes of that. The data of modal split was compared with the supply of public transport and with this we established that there is a significant link between the high public transportation usage and the high quality and competitiveness offer of public transportation vis-à-vis personal transportation. The next chapter was dedicated to particular pilot areas where the supply of public transport was greatly improved (Dol pri Ljubljani, Ankaran, Idrija, Nova Gorica). With the method of field interviewing and passenger counting we found out that the greatly improved offer of public transport does not necessarily cause a greater demand for public transport and thus the shift towards a more sustainable mobility. The synthesis of the book is in ten recommendations of possible transport policy measures for the purpose of achieving more sustainable mobility patterns with workers and students. Knjiga prikazuje problematiko dnevnih potovanj šolarjev in delavcev v Sloveniji, zlasti z vidika izbire prometnega sredstva.

Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities, including commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. 'The Geography of Transport Systems 'is concerned about movements along with the infrastructures, institutions and corporations supporting them. It tries to link spatial constraints and attributes with the origin, the destination, the extent, the nature and the purpose of movements. It is divided in nine chapters, each covering a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes terminals, international transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. Each chapter also covers methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation. Aimed at an undergraduate audience, the text provides a comprehensive introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. A particular emphasis has been placed in the development of web based didactic material that can be incorporated in lectures such as PowerPoint slides, exercises, databases and GIS datasets.
