Abstract

"Preface The construction industry is very conservative. This can be seen as deriving from the special nature of its work which is creating the social and economic infrastructures required by each particular age in a "safe" way. Architecture is to some extent ahead of its time in the design of buildings but also reflects the inclinations of clients. In other words, the basic activity of the construction industry has been to reliably translate social needs into material form. Naturally, with the growing sophistication of requirements, construction technology has developed and many breakthroughs have been achieved to make the impossible possible, but this process has also been marked by many failures. The construction industry can be said to have built its technology systems through a process of "experience engineering." The construction industry exhibits a high degree of locality. Structures have generally been built by local people using local materials. Globalization has promoted internationalization in the construction industry as elsewhere, but the basics of construction systems have remained unchanged. What makes this possible is the wide use of concrete as a construction material. Its primary component materials are aggregate, cement, and water, with aggregate constituting approximately 70% of the total volume. The Earth's crust is composed of rocks that are the raw materials for aggregate. Water, when seawater is included, is the most commonly available globally circulating substance on Earth. In the case of cement, the raw materials are limestone and clay, both of which are also available in abundance"--

Abstract

Today exposed concrete is enjoying a renaissance as an important material in architecture. In addition to opening up new possibilities in construction it has led us to discover many different forms of surface structure. The quality of the exposed surface depends on numourous factors and its difficult to achieve in practice merely by following a set of rules for creating exposed concrete surfaces. For a discerning design it is not always a matter of simply providing a blemish-free surface. However, in every case, a high degree of precise skill and craftsmanship is demanded from those involved. Leaving a concrete surface visible from the inside or outside meets the need to lay the structure and quality of a building open to the view of the observer or user, thus creating a directly comprehensible logicality of structure, form and surface. Numerous examples of buildings by internationally active architects explain the complex design approaches and principles for the use of exposed concrete. The technical part of the book goes into the materials, methods and working processes, gives an insight into the innovative technologies employed and advice on maintenance and the avoidance of defects. In a comprehensive way the book describes the possibilities and requirements of surface texture with exposed concrete and moreover demonstrates the relationship between conceptional design and thinking in concrete.

Abstract

Today, concrete experiences a renaissance; one could speak of a neo-concrete era. The advantages adjudicated to this material have fundamentally changed. Modern types of concrete are available on the market for a multitude of applications - ranging from light and insulating to filigree and high pressure resistant. Concrete fascinates as no other material does since in its fluid state it can be forced into any conceivable mould while becoming highly pressure resistant and massive when hardened. However, the advantage also becomes the material’s main disadvantage: concrete and formwork are closely interdependent. Only with formwork does concrete become a usable building material. Thus elaborate concrete parts require elaborate formwork. The book 'imagine 08. Concretable' illustrates what concrete is already capable of as well as what else is possible. Furthermore, it also shows future developments in the material - where concrete’s technological, constructive and - always a driving factor - aesthetic and design-related potential lie.

Abstract

The publication presents an analysis of 16 selected Swiss concrete buildings in scales 1:10 and 1:1 using large-scale detailed isometric drawings and is the result of in-depth research by the authors at the Architecture Department of the ETH Zurich. The book demonstrates the innovative strength of Swiss architectural production, which combines current technical requirements with sophisticated building culture.
