Part of the problem of dealing with terrorism is in its definition: it is often depicted as something new and totally alien, a phantom enemy that cannot be understood. But by employing a sophisticated analysis soundly based on an encyclopedic knowledge of military history, Donald J. Hanle shows that three major forms of terrorism--Military, Revolutionary, and State-Sponsored-- qualify as the newest forms of war. The author's in-depth investigation reveals that these kinds of terrorists operate in the same basic manner as military forces employed in traditional warfare and have the same basic c

This book explores new horizons for the economic analysis of terrorism with an innovative combination of economics and offender profiling. The book is aimed at contributing to law enforcement efforts to pre-empt and pursue the lone wolf terrorist. By taking the economic analysis of terrorism back to its core concepts of 'opportunities' and 'choices' and by insisting that all results be both computable and relevant to the investigative process, the author examines lone wolf terrorism from a unique perspective that yields new insights into the nature of the lone wolf terrorist's opportunities an

When President Barack Obama announced the assassination of Osama bin Laden, many Americans hoped the killing of al-Qaida's leader would sound the death knell for the organization. Since 9/11, killing and capturing terrorist leaders has been a central element in U.S. counterterrorism strategy. This practice, known as leadership decapitation, is based on the logic that removing key figures will disrupt the organization and contribute to its ultimate failure. Yet many scholars have argued that targeted killings are ineffective or counterproductive, questioning whether taking out a terror network's leaders causes more problems than it solves. In Targeting Top Terrorists, Bryan C. Price offers a rich, data-driven examination of leadership decapitation tactics, providing theoretical and empirical explanations of the conditions under which they can be successful. Analyzing hundreds of cases of leadership turnover from over two hundred terrorist groups, Price demonstrates that although the tactic may result in short-term negative side effects, the loss of top leaders significantly reduces terror groups' life spans. He explains vital questions such as: What factors make some terrorist groups more vulnerable than others? Is it better to kill or capture terrorist leaders? How does leadership decapitation compare to other counterterrorism options? With compelling evidence based on an original dataset along with an in-depth case study of Hamas, Targeting Top Terrorists contributes to scholarship on terrorism and organizational theory and provides insights for policy makers and practitioners on some of the most pressing debates in the field.

"This book analyses the usefulness of terrorist profiling utilised by law enforcement officers as a pre-emptive means to assist them in the detection, prevention and deterrence of terrorism and/or its preparatory activities. It explores two main themes arising from the phenomenon of terrorist profiling; the lawfulness of terrorist profiling and the utility of profiling. These two themes are explored in three separate parts. First, the book begins by drawing upon human rights concerns arising from the use of terrorist profiling by law enforcement officers. Second, is the presentation of an analytical framework capable of making determinations on the usefulness of terrorist profiling. This framework develops a profiling spectrum that ranges from formal and informal manifestations of terrorist profiling that forms the basis for evaluating its usefulness. Finally, the work presents an examination of various manifestations of terrorist profiling by separating the analysis of the "construction" of profiles on the one hand, from their "application", on the other, so as to be able to identify and examine profiling's usefulness as a technique to assist law enforcement officers make predictions about likely offender characteristics"--
