Abstract

"The modern manifestation of the mummy studies field began to take shape in the 1970s. Largely stemming from a biomedical interest in soft tissue pathology, mummy based research has experienced significant growth during the last several decades. Although this points to a vibrant field, there are indications that we need to take stock of where it is today and how it may proceed in the future. In many ways, mummy studies and skeletal bioarchaeology are 'sister-disciplines', sharing data sources, methodologies, and practitioners. Given these close connections, this book considers whether paradigmatic shifts that influenced the development of the latter also impacted the former. This volume is unique in several ways. First, although there are many books that discuss mummy research, this volume does not focus on any particular mummy or collection of mummies. Rather, it is an attempt at a synthetic, state-of-the-field, critical analysis. Further, whereas recent field-wide reviews principally reflect a biomedical perspective, I consider the field from a more explicitly anthropological perspective. This book is intended for two audiences. On the one hand, it is written for skeletal bioarchaeologists that may not be familiar with the scope of mummy research. This book was also written for mummy researchers from biomedical fields that may not be as familiar with current research trends within bioarchaeology"--

Abstract

Archaeological excavation has been widely used in the recovery of human remains and other evidence in the service of legal cases for many years. However, established approaches will in future be subject to closer scrutiny following the announcement by the Law Commission in 2011 that expert evidence will in future be subject to a new reliability-based admissibility test in criminal proceedings. This book evaluates current archaeological excavation methods and recording systems ? focusing on those used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australasia, and North America ? in relation to their use in providing forensic evidence, and their ability to satisfy the admissibility tests introduced by the Law Commission, and other internationally recognised bodies. 00In order to achieve this aim, two analyses were undertaken. First, attention was directed to understanding the origins, development, underpinning philosophies, and current use of archaeological excavation methods and recording systems in the regions selected for study. A total of 153 archaeological manuals/guidelines were examined from archaeological organisations operating in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Abstract

Arqueología de la Guerra Civil y la Dictadura Española collects contributions from different research teams that have worked on this topic in the last fifteen years. The application of archaeology to the studies of the contest has been relatively recent and began simultaneously in the year 2000, with the excavation of the second line of defense of Madrid in Villa de Vallecas and the mass grave of Priaranza in El Bierzo - León -." Abstract

This volume centers on the application of social theory to commingled remains with special focus on the cultural processes that create the assemblages as a way to better understand issues of meaning, social structure and interaction, and lived experience in the past. The importance of the application of theoretical frameworks to bioarchaeology in general has been recognized, but commingled and fragmentary assemblages require an increased theoretical focus. Too often these assemblages are still relegated to appendices; they are analytical puzzles that need the interpretive power offered by social theory. Theoretical Approaches to Analysis and Interpretation of Commingled Human Remains provides case studies that illustrate how an appropriate theoretical model can be used with commingled and fragmentary remains to add to overall site and population level interpretations of past and present peoples. Specifically, the contributions show a blending and melding of different social theories, highlighting the broad interpretive power of social theory. Contributors are drawn from both the Old and New World. Temporally, time periods from the Neolithic to historic periods are present, further widening the audience for the volume.
