Abstract

In Viral Hepatitis: Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prevention, leading international virologists review the state-of-the-art in the biology, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of the hepatitis viruses. The authorities writing here examine the five well-recognized hepatitis viruses, A through E, and some of the newer agents, the so-called non A-E hepatitis viruses. They also provide in-depth discussions of the biology of the viruses, the pathogenesis of the acute and chronic diseases they cause, the methods and ease with which they are transmitted, and their clinical signs and symptoms. Additional topics include diagnostic tests and routine blood screening, new vaccines, and the use of interferon and antiviral drugs. Viral Hepatitis: Diagnosis, Therapy, and Prevention provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the hepatitis viruses currently available. Rich in the practical details of viral diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, it constitutes today's gold-standard reference on this major health threat for all concerned physicians and researchers.

Abstract

In the 15 years of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic much has been learnt about its natural history and complications. It is clear that the lung is a major target organ both for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and a wide array of infectious and non-infectious pulmonary complications. A great deal of information on the epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, clinical features, diagnosis and management of these pulmonary complications has accumulated during the past 15 years. Given the enormous explosion in information, it is now timely to bring together this knowledge in this 25-chapter volume on AIDS and respiratory medicine. The contributors to this volume are prominent epidemiologists, doctors, microbiologists and scientists from Europe, USA and Africa. Professors Chretien and Enarson give a masterful account of the epidemiology of lung complications of HIV. Drs Zumla, Rowland Jones and Professor McMichael give a detailed summary of the lung immune responses to HIV. They outline normal lung defenses and discuss the consequences of HIV infection on them. The pulmonary radiological features of HIV and its complications as seen in the USA and Europe are illustrated by Professors Armstrong and Dee and this is compared and contrasted by Professor Tshibwabwa-Tumba who brings together his vast experience of chest X-rays in AIDS patients from Central Africa. Drs O'Doherty and Miller deal with the uses, and potential applications, of nuclear medicine in imaging of the chest in AIDS patients.

Abstract

The complex problems of opportunistic infections in patients suffering from an underlying immunodeficiency is a significant medical issue and calls for a concise, yet comprehensive, resource to present the essential information that clinicians require to provide effective medical care. In Opportunistic Infections: Treatment and Prophylaxis, Vassil St. Georgiev surveys the current status of all the major bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections affecting the immunocompromised population, as well as the anti-infective agents available to treat and prevent them. The author covers individual infections caused not only by well-known etiologic agents, but also by new and emerging species often closely related taxonomically to a major disease-producing microorganism and until recently not considered a human pathogen (e.g., Candida spp. and nontuberculous mycobacteria). The information presented includes data from large well-planned clinical trials, as well as reports of cases involving individuals and small numbers of patients. The latter highlight therapeutic possibilities that may otherwise go unnoticed in clinical practice or in drug research and development. Numerous examples are given of particular treatment regimens for opportunistic infections based on underlying immunologic deficiencies. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Opportunistic Infections: Treatment and Prophylaxis organizes the wealth of information found in the medical and scientific literature and illuminates those areas of drug development and treatment that, though still not well understood, are crucial to effective patient management, infection prevention, and the development of new therapeutic modalities against infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients.

Abstract

In Biotherapeutic Agents and Infectious Diseases, leading investigators active in the discovery, development, and application of this novel class of anti-infective agents concisely review the use of these special microorganisms in treating human disease. Focusing on biotherapeutic entities that have been tested in controlled studies, the prominent experts illuminate the scientific underpinnings of their therapeutic potential, assess their possible risks in the treatment of infectious diseases, and outline the research needed to better define their effectiveness. In addition, they also consider biotherapeutic agents may be genetically engineered for maximum intestinal and vaginal production of bioactive substances in vivo. Biotherapeutic Agents and Infectious Diseases brings together all the evidence needed to understand and capitalize on the considerable promise of this significant new class of biotherapeutic entities. As an alternative to antibiotics that increasingly lead to drug-resistant pathogens, the living microorganisms described in this timely and authoritative book will significantly aid today's clinicians in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed rapid growth in new information on the crucial role played by cytokines and chemokines in human disease, as well as on the exciting possibilities they offer for developing novel therapies and for optimizing vaccine performance. In the Cytokines and Chemokines in Infectious Diseases Handbook, international leaders in the field comprehensively review what is known about the responses of cytokines and chemokines to a variety of human infectious diseases, including gram-negative and gram-positive infections, listeriosis, mycobacterial infections, lyme arthritis, pneumonia, fungal infections, HIV, leishmaniasis, and sepsis. The authors demonstrate the different cytokine and chemokine production profiles in response to a wide range of pathogens and the importance of host genetic factors in determining the type and magnitude of responses to a given micro-organism. They also critically evaluate the use of cytokines and anticytokines in the treatment of infectious diseases and show how knowledge of cytokine pleiotropic effects, redundancy, and the complexity of the cytokine network has led to better design and better outcomes in cytokine-based therapies for specific infections. The book also offers important information for those working in biodefense research through its illustration of the role of cytokines and chemokines in modulating host-pathogen interactions and vaccine responses. Comprehensive and cutting-edge, the Cytokines and Chemokines in Infectious Diseases Handbook summarizes all the new scientific and clinical discoveries essential to understanding the importance of cytokines and chemokines in human infectious diseases, and demonstrates how best to utilize their unique properties in the design and development of effective new therapeutic agents.
