Abstract

"The tasks of medicine : an ideology of care" seeks to shift the focus of medical practice from disease to people, emphasising that people's needs be recognised, understood and treated with respect and sensitivity. This important book asks : where do we go from here? As medical research continues at a rapid pace, there is an increasing need for a balance between the parts of medicine; a new comprehension of the needs of society; and the encouragement of cooperation between the different sections of the healing professions. Important questions are asked about ethical considerations, the recognition of human values, and what constitutes caring in the modern medical context. While the shortcomings of a disease-oriented approach are presented, the book also sets out the real achievements of modern bioscience and public health. It provides a rare account of significant contributions of Australian biomedical research and of the positive effects of progress in public health upon individual health.

Abstract

In Between Doctors and Patients, Lillian R. Furst brings together the seemingly incompatible worlds of medicine and literature to illustrate the changing balance of power between doctors and patients since the evolution of modern medicine. Linking popular novels with recent works of medical history, she offers an astute portrait of medicine's emergence from a semi-quack profession to one of the most revered in contemporary society. Furst shows how vividly such novels as Eliot's Middlemarch, Lewis's Arrowsmith, and the stories of Conan Doyle reveal the changing role of doctors from once-modest supplicants to powerul healers.

Abstract

In his important textbook, the author, assuming no prior philosophical knowledge, covers the controversial issues of euthanasia, abortion and experimentation on humans and animals, as well as looking at the right to self-determination and the limits of confidentiality. Each topic is lucidly introduced and then examined in more depth through extracts taken from such major ethical thinkers as James Rachels, Sissela Bok and Peter Singer. Pertinent case studies bring the subjects to life, and there are exercises for individual or group work, and a well organised bibliography at the end of each chapter, for those who researching particular area more deeply. This excellent introduction is for anyone with an interest in human well-being, and provides vital theoretical tools for those facing real medical dilemmas. Moreover it is an essential text for the ethical content in the training of medical students, nurses and other health professionals.
