"This open access book, originally published in Portuguese in 1988 and now available in English for the first time, describes the Brazilian educator, Antonio Leal's, experiences teaching so-called "unteachable" children in Rio de Janeiro's favelas. A Voice for Maria Favela tells the story of how Leal considers what the children bring to the class, gradually engaging them in developing a narrative about Maria Favela, a single mother and housemaid. Leal uses the sounds within the story to draw out the students' abilities to see enunciation and articulation as a process of becoming literatized. A contemporary and admirer of Paulo Freire, Leal nevertheless recognised that his students' needs could not be theorized along Freirean lines of oppressor/oppressed. He devised an emancipatory approach that is more focussed on the individual child and their capacity for self-expression than those often found in critical pedagogy. The book puts forward a unique type of radical pedagogy and philosophy of education, developed through direct classroom observation. The book includes a substantial introduction written by the translator Alexis Gibbs (University of Winchester, UK) and preface by Inny Accioly (Fluminense Federal University, Brazil). Dans les pays de l’OCDE, nombreux sont les adultes en situation d’illettrisme. L’impact de ce déficit de compétences de base se fait sentir sur la situation économique, la santé, et le bien-être social des individus, des familles et de la société. Il est donc nécessaire d’investir dans ce secteur de la formation des adultes. Cette étude porte spécifiquement sur les programmes des adultes en situation d’illettrisme et met l’accent sur l’évaluation formative. Se fondant sur les données probantes issues de rapports nationaux, d’études de cas exemplaires et d’analyses d’études internationales, ce volume examine les effets et la mise en œuvre de différentes méthodes d’enseignement, d’apprentissage et d’évaluation pour ces apprenants adultes, la façon dont des programmes novateurs répondent aux multiples besoins et objectifs de ces derniers, ainsi que les actions qui soutiennent ou entravent l’efficacité de ces méthodes. L’ouvrage met en lumière les enjeux essentiels de la formation pour adultes en situation d’illettrisme et permet d’orienter les politiques, les pratiques et la recherche. Un volume complémentaire, qui portait sur l’évaluation formative dans l’enseignement secondaire, est paru en 2005 sous le titre L’évaluation formative, pour un meilleur apprentissage dans les classes secondaires.

De quoi parle-t-on, quand on parle d "illettrisme" ? Réalité nouvelle de notre civilisation ? Fléau social ? Manifestation de l'inaptitude foncière de certains ? Avant de prétendre lutter contre l'illettrisme" n'avons-nous pas d'abord à le mieux connaître ? C'est bien d'une mise en questions qu'il s'agit dans cet ouvrage, avec le souci d'opêrer un nécessaire déplacement, en même temps qu'un dévoilement de nos images souvent simplificatrices qui dissimulent les effectives difficultés de ces adultes aux prises avec le "lire-écrire". Une telle situation, dans ses implications individuelles et sociales, est ici interrogée par des approches scientifiquement autonomes, mais convergentes : sociologique, au préalable, pour déconstruire et repenser cet objet social ; psycholinguistique et sociolinguistique ensuite, pour mieux comprendre la structure du phénomène ; clinique enfin, en vue d'en rechercher le sens possible pour les sujets. Les éclairages ainsi fournis par ces contributions sont confrontés à certaines des modalités adoptées pour l'action, qu'il s'agisse de l'évaluation de dispositifs existants, de l'analyse de procédures de prévention ou de l'exploration de voies nouvelles.

Since the early 1990s hundreds of thousands of Tamil villagers in southern India have participated in literacy lessons, science demonstrations, and other events designed to transform them into active citizens with access to state power. These efforts to spread enlightenment among the oppressed are part of a movement known as the Arivoli Iyakkam (the Enlightenment Movement), considered to be among the most successful mass literacy movements in recent history. In The Light of Knowledge, Francis Cody’s ethnography of the Arivoli Iyakkam highlights the paradoxes inherent in such movements that seek to emancipate people through literacy when literacy is a power-laden social practice in its own right.The Light of Knowledge is set primarily in the rural district of Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, and it is about activism among laboring women from marginalized castes who have been particularly active as learners and volunteers in the movement. In their endeavors to remake the Tamil countryside through literacy activism, workers in the movement found that their own understanding of the politics of writing and Enlightenment was often transformed as they encountered vastly different notions of language and imaginations of social order. Indeed, while activists of the movement successfully mobilized large numbers of rural women, they did so through logics that often pushed against the very Enlightenment rationality they hoped to foster. Offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at an increasingly important area of social and political activism, The Light of Knowledge brings tools of linguistic anthropology to engage with critical social theories of the postcolonial state.
